Working at The Humane Society
Over the last couple of quarters my community engagement class has been doing volunteer work at the Maui Humane Society. This work is mostly manual labor, mostly meant to ease the work load on the Humane Society staff. These jobs are mostly things like folding news paper to size to line the traps for feral cats or putting in slats in the fence. Almost all of these jobs are making an abundant use of our self directional skills as we aren't very closely supervised in doing these jobs.
In all honesty I do feel pretty pleased with myself after volunteering for the Humane Society. The work may not be very fun and in the moment I might want to be doing something else, but afterwards I always find myself feeling somewhat pleased with myself because I helped my community.
I'm entirely sure how I improved myself over the course of doing this apart from working on my self directional skills. However, I did find out a lot about what it is the Humane Society dose and just how important volunteer work is.
Even though I really liked my time working with the Humane Society there were still times that I just wasn't working. This didn't affect my grade hardly at all, but I feel that I could have done so much more if I had been more on task while working with them. Without a doubt if I could do this project over again I would spend more time working.
As far as past experiences go, this reminds me of countless scouting and school activities. Reminiscing about all of those activities helped me get into the sort of, volunteer mindset.
As difficult as this project was, there is still much to come. I have two or three very large projects that I can look forward to in this year and in a few years to come. The first of which would be my Eagle scout project, and just after that I have to get started on the junior and senor projects that my school requires to graduate.
