Chemistry 161 Lab
Chemistry 161 Lab is essentially the hands on portion of UHMC's entry level chemistry class. And it served to give us the basics of how to work in a chemistry lab and do the math. While the experiments were extremely simple I still learned quite a lot in this class from how to calculate the concentration of a solution to how to avoid and deal with laboratory fires.
Of course, since I had to work in a group of three to four, I had to use those interpersonal skills for one of the first times in a while since the pandemic. But I also had to use quite a bit of critical thinking to do these experiments as well because I had to make accurate measurements, use those measurements to find other values I need (like using the mass of a certain substance to find the number of moles), all while making sure I use the correct number of significant figures.
I'm personally pretty proud that I didn't mess anything up. Even though the experiments were very simple I'm still pretty happy with the fact that I was actually able to measure things out pretty accurately and do the experiments.
I'll be honest, up until recently my interpersonal skills were probably lacking because I didn't have to go to class all through the pandemic. So actively having to work with people that I just met less than a few minuets ago forced me to get better at interacting with other people and making friends. In fact, having to meet new people and work with them after such a long time in quarantine had to have been the most difficult part of this whole class. Simply because I was almost a bit out of practice.
If I can start this project over and change one thing I would probably try to set up a study group for this chemistry class. That would've helped me get to know everyone better and it would've made just about all of the homework less difficult and less time consuming.
The class that I think prepared me the most for chemistry 161 lab would have to be Ms. S's chemistry class in sophomore year. This class retreaded a lot of territory from the sophomore chemistry class, like properly naming acids and the periodic law of elements.
As for using this knowledge in the future, I'm planning on taking plenty more classes in chemistry and thermodynamics in the future. In fact, next semester I'm planning on taking Chemistry 162 and Chemistry 162 Lab.
