9th Circuit Civics Essay
Around the end of this quarter we had to enter into an essay contest about voting barriers. In this essay we had to use our informational literacy skills to recherche supreme court cases like the Elk v Wilkins and Minor v Happersett cases. Next we had to use some of our civic literacy skills to understand and write about how the outcomes of these cases affect voting rights in the modern era. In addition to that we still had to use the technological literacy and self directional skills because most of the work we did on this project was at home and on a computer.
I really like the way that the end product was written as well as the fact that I put a lot of work into this project and I think it really shows. Even before writing the essay I found myself making outlines and recherche notes to make sure the end product was more than acceptable, and it really payed off.
This project was clearly meant to help me learn about the history of voting barriers and not to just improve on my writing abilities. Dispite that, I think this project helped me make great strides in my ability to write and I also greatly improved my grammar. I also managed to improve my note taking skills along with the ability to find reputable sources.
Although I got better at checking my sources by the end of the project I didn't check my sources at the start of the project and my rough draft ended up with things that just weren't correct. I also regret not being able to get more people to review my essay, I think that my essay would be much better if there were more eyes to see it before I turned it in.
If I could start over and do this project all over again I would make sure that all of my information is correct from the start, so rather than rewriting arias of my essay I can spend my time improving my essay in other ways.
Although this was for an essay contest the writing and editing of this essay was almost exactly the same process as how I go about writing almost every other essay this year. The note taking and rough draft in particular seemed very familiar.
Even though I have been doing this a lot I still need to practice a lot more if I'm going to get talented enough to write essays to apply for scholarships and maybe to apply to the schools themselves. To do that I'm going to need all of the practice I can get, and on top of that I'm planning on taking the English 100 class next year, so Ill need every bit of practice I can get.
