Eddie Aikau essay
Last Quarter an essay contest was held between every school in Hawai'i. There was a cash prize for the first, second, and third places, along with some honorable mentions. Our English teacher challenged us to enter into the competition for a grade. By the end of this we had to use our Self Directional skills and Information Literacy to learn about Eddie's life. Although I didn't present this I also had to use my communication skills so I could communicate the ideas and themes in my essay to unnamed judges in the contest.
I felt very proud to turn in this project because this was one of the first essays that I thought I wrote well, and as critical as I am about my own work, I still couldn't find much wrong with it. I made sure that the facts were correct and I had people look at it and make sure it was well written. This just really seemed to be the first writing assignment that I couldn't find much wrong with it.
I personally think this assignment saw a huge benefit to my work ethic, and I found myself finishing significant parts of this project every day. I also feel like my writing ability got better in working on this assignment, mostly because I kept rereading thru the essay looking for errors or just poor wording.
I found that the hardest part of completing this project was my need for perfection. While I was working on this project it never seemed good enough to me. This mentality ultimately lead to a better end product, but it also meant that I may have pent way more time on this than I needed to. The project also required us to find examples of restraint, love, and understanding and find a way to relate the examples in his life to our own. This in particular was very difficult to me. I had two major problems with this, the first being finding an example of Eddie showing restraint in his life, and the second was relating that to my own life.
If I could start over and fix something about this project, I would try to find more ways that I can relate to Eddie Aikau's life, and I would also just, not stress about this so much. I firmly believe that I may have produced a better end project if I just relaxed a bit more when I worked on it.
This project is pretty comparable to nearly every other generic research and essay project that I have done so far. But, as far as I can tell things like the general structure of the project was completely new.
The ability to write a cohesive and interesting essay is gonna be a huge help throughout high school, collage, and it's probably going to be a large help in my adult life as well.
