Teaching a Merit badge
|
For my senior project I decided to teach the Engineering Merit Badge to the younger scouts in Troop 22. I chose this merit badge because, in addition to being about something that I have a bit of a personal interest in, it also has quite a few hands on requirements that the scouts have and will definitely continue to have fun with.
While the badge, especially the hands on portions, was very fun to teach. It was also very difficult for me. Teaching is definitely not a skill that comes naturally to me. Commanding a room full of people, especially children takes a certain amount of confidence, volume, and patience. It also turns out that you must know the course material very well to teach others. My calculus professor said that the way he got from being pretty good at math to insanely good at math was through tutoring others. And in a sort of trial by fire way I drastically improved upon all of these aspects. In fact, I want to tutor people in college on my free time to both help them and sharpen my skills further. |
