Self direction
Because we weren't able to exactly come to school we had to do our PE studies completely on our own. I decided to use my attendance of my Jiu-jitsu academy for my PE credit this year. After deciding what to do for exercise all the assignment became about was taking it upon myself to go exercise at Maui Jiu-Jitsu twice a week and to log my hours so I could turn them in by the end of the quarter.
If it sounds like this assignment is mostly keeping myself motivated and steadily making progress of the long term goal, it's because that's what 90% of this project is. The teachers aren't going to constantly babysit me and ask me to keep working; if I decide not to meet the requirements, that's on me and me alone. That's why the 21st century skill that this project highlights the most is Self Direction.
The one thing that I am most proud of in this assignment is my improvement in the sport itself. That's not to say that I'm the best in my class or anything like that, but I think I have improved a great deal sense the school year started and I hope to get a belt promotion soon.
Having to keep track and do a little bit of work on a larger project over a long period of time is honestly pretty hard. Even in that work is simply to write down hours and get a signature every so often. Doing a project such as this has almost forced me to get better at Self Direction and now I feel like I can plan out long projects and budget time with relative ease.
The most difficult part about completing this task is simply finding time for it when I was just starting out. It was way to easy for me to focus on assignments that are due in the short term instead of setting aside time to fill out paperwork for an assignment that has a lot of time left until the due date sneaks up on me out of nowhere. If I could start over and change one thing I would work on budgeting my time better right off the bat so I didn't have to learn how to budget time the hard way.
As for relating this to past assignments I can't really relate this project to anything that I have done in the past. The amount of self direction is on a completely different level than any of the assignments that I've done.
Although nothing like this has cropped up in the past, I think college will be chock full of assignments that are at least equally as self directed as this one. Judging by the stories of college class that I've heard from some friends, apparently college teachers will absolutely not tell you to keep working and if you don't turn something in, they'll simply give you an F on that assignment. With that in mind I think that Self Direction is going to be the most important skill in college. d
